What are these “Off” signs for? They don’t light up when the train is in the platform and only turn on once it pulls out.
I guess passengers don’t need to know what it means. As long as the driver does then I can live with that.
I can tell you that they weigh 27kg. I wouldn’t want that falling on my head!
Since posting this on Facebook, Ed Crosthwaite, friend and resident expert in all things trains, has commented:
It [the Off sign] refers to the signal giving the train permission to leave the platform, but is for the benefit of staff working on the platform who can’t see it. Signals can be referred to as ‘on’ (stop) or ‘off’ (clear).
